@womeninmedchat @petradMD Hi! Ilana Krumm, an internal medicine resident chiming in from Seattle! #WomenInMedicine
Pooja Lakshmin MD @PoojaLakshmin
@womeninmedchat @InduPartha A1. Great question. I’m not sure how much of it is related to gender, but I find when I’m teaching I focus less on “this is the one right answer” and more on “there are many right answers and less think about how to get to them”. #womeninmedicine
Jessi Gold MD MS @drjessigold
@darakass @womeninmedchat @petradMD I’m delayed in an airport in Canada. And here? Jessi, psych attending, wash u #WomenInMedicine
Nonie S. Arora, MD MBA @nonie_arora
@womeninmedchat @petradMD Hi! Nonie from MI here, 4th year med student from University of Michigan. Happy Sunday! #womeninmedicine
Kari Sampsel @KariSampsel
@womeninmedchat @InduPartha A1: I’m far more blunt/honest about my failures. I figure it is instructive to others to know I’m not perfect and to try to avoid the mistakes I’ve made. #womeninmedicine
Allison Larson, MD @AllisonLarsonMD

Grace Oliver, MD @GraceOliverMD
A1 Idk how much of it is due to just my personality as opposed to my gender, but I notice my presentation style is (or tries to be) more humorous and emotionally relatable to be engaging, and my leadership style is less hierarchical #WomenInMedicine
Valerie A. Fitzhugh, MD @DrFNA
@womeninmedchat @InduPartha A1: I think I tend to say yes to so many things that I run myself ragged, and somehow I make it all work, whereas I find my male colleagues to be more selective in their roles. #WomenInMedicine
Gigi Liu @G2Disrupt
@womeninmedchat @InduPartha Women’s leadership style tends to emphasize collaboration and being inclusive. #Womeninmedicine
Carrie Bernard MD she/her @carriedbernard
@womeninmedchat @InduPartha In some ways I feel that sharing my worries and triumphs comes more naturally to me than to my male counterparts. Because we share, we get an opportunity to learn from each other #womeninmedicine
Briana Christophers, PhD @BriChristophers
@womeninmedchat A1. I’m a student, so not too much to say on trenching/practice style but as far as leadership - I am very personal with whoever I am working with on a team. Some people may find that unprofessional but we are all ourselves first so why hide what makes us us 🤷🏽‍♀️ #WomenInMedicine
Shreya P. Trivedi MD, MHPE @ShreyaTrivediMD
@womeninmedchat @InduPartha A1. My experience of as a #womeninmedicine has shaped my explicit pauses, asking myself if Im being implicitly bias towards a female trainee or colleague i.e often ask myself, if a man had done/said the same, would I have the same rxn? Given more benefit of the doubt?
Bonnie Callahan @bcallahan430
@womeninmedchat @InduPartha Such a stereotype, but I think I am more patient and understanding, though maybe sometimes I can be a push over... ☹️ #womeninmedicine
Valerie A. Fitzhugh, MD @DrFNA
@InduPartha @womeninmedchat Wow! I had my first 5 years into being an attending, but I agree motherhood definitely made me more efficient! #WomenInMedicine
Agnieszka Solberg MD @AgnesSolberg
@womeninmedchat @InduPartha #womeninmedicine A1 Lead by example. No need to put trainees and others through the same hell we went through. Be kind, be supportive, be encouraging. Don’t be a b[t€h. Empathy is ❤️. @RadiologyChicks
Jennifer Caputo-Seidler, MD @jennifermcaputo
A1: my style is more collaborative and less authoritative which I suppose is sterotylically more feminine approach #WomenInMedicine
KrisEmily McCrory MD, MS Med Ed, FAAFP (she/her) @KrisEmilyMD
Also “I have a colleague who I can recommend.” Support and uplift others. #sheforshe #WomenInMedicine
Jennifer Yui, MD MS @JenniferYuiMD
@womeninmedchat @InduPartha A1: I think that being aware of gender bias and the minority experience of #WomenInMedicine makes me reflect on my own #implicitbias, and be intentional about supporting all minority voices, including those groups I don't belong to.
Amy Oxentenko MD @AmyOxentenkoMD
@womeninmedchat @InduPartha A1. I was forced to develop efficiency skills during training to survive. I had 2 babies and was pregnant with 3rd, all in fellowship, and my hubby worked out of town so I did all childcare. Juggling many duties gave me an efficiency skillset. #WomenInMedicine
Agnieszka Solberg MD @AgnesSolberg
@rheum_cat @womeninmedchat @petradMD I think I may have PTSD from biostats... #WomenInMedicine
Pooja Lakshmin MD @PoojaLakshmin
@womeninmedchat @InduPartha But the truth is psychiatry is much more nuanced. #WomeninMedicine
Allison Larson, MD @AllisonLarsonMD
@womeninmedchat @InduPartha A1. I try to create a supportive environment to honor the different ways learner think through dilemmas. This stems from my own fear of being wrong as a student. #WomenInMedicine
Shreya P. Trivedi MD, MHPE @ShreyaTrivediMD
@NarjustDuma @womeninmedchat @InduPartha Agree I do find women tend to be more #relational leaders #WomeninMedicine
Kristen D Manter, MD @KManterMD
@womeninmedchat @petradMD Hello, Kristen Manter, Family Physician in NYC here for at least part of the #womeninmedicine chat.
Emily Fridenmaker @emily_fri
@womeninmedchat @InduPartha A1: Being a mom has taught me efficiency, organization, and patience. I always feel like I’m mothering the people I work with. #womeninmedicine
Jennifer Caputo-Seidler, MD @jennifermcaputo
@DrFNA @womeninmedchat @InduPartha Agree, as women we tend to fill up our plate when asked, even to the point of putting others’ needs above our own #WomeninMedicine
Jennifer Yui, MD MS @JenniferYuiMD
@AgnesSolberg @womeninmedchat @InduPartha @RadiologyChicks Absolutely this! The "We did it, so you should to, and shouldn't complain about it!" attitude is one of the most toxic things about medical culture, and we should be actively combatting it, not putting our trainees through it! #WomenInMedicine
Shreya P. Trivedi MD, MHPE @ShreyaTrivediMD
@KariSampsel @womeninmedchat @InduPartha thats great Kari ! Im sure ur mentees really appreciate that 😃 #WomeninMedicine
Indu Partha, MD FACP @InduPartha
@womeninmedchat And a strong desire to help women coming up in ways I wasn’t helped...or maybe I just didn’t know to ask for help. (End) #WomenInMedicine
Marisha Burden, MD, MBA @marishaburden
@DrFNA @womeninmedchat @InduPartha I have often found that saying yes (more often than no) leads to more opportunities and more collaborations! #WomenInMedicine @womeninmedchat
olgatheotter @OlgatheOtter
@womeninmedchat @InduPartha A1 I think my practice style differs in that I have to work harder to have nurses/techs/secretaries not think I'm a b#tch when I give the same orders my male collegues give #womeninmedicine
Stacy Goldbaum, DO @WhiteCoatDiary
@womeninmedchat @InduPartha A1. Not sure if it's gender related or being DO, but I think I'm more empathetic when it comes to listening to my patients and considering them as a whole person. There's also a lot to be said about placing a comforting hand on a shoulder in times of need. #womeninmedicine
Jennifer Caputo-Seidler, MD @jennifermcaputo
@carriedbernard @womeninmedchat @InduPartha I think this chat has shown us the power of sharing our experiences #WomenInMedicine

Cant’t wait to reflect, learn, and empower one another! #FIX18 #WomenInMedicine
Dr. Meadow Maze Good, DO, FACOG, CPXP🥼🥋🐊🇺🇸 @MeadowGood
RT @DrMStiegler: Do not look at colleagues as competition. There's no scarcity of success. Do you. Do it well. Share the password. Invite others in liberally. We're all in this together. #womeninmedicine
Valerie A. Fitzhugh, MD @DrFNA
@jennifermcaputo @womeninmedchat @InduPartha And we definitely have to be careful about doing that. If we don’t take care of ourselves, who will? #WomenInMedicine
Kari Sampsel @KariSampsel
@ShreyaTrivediMD @womeninmedchat @InduPartha I try! It can be so daunting to look at someone and only hear about their hero moments when you are barely keeping it together. Being human is great and fosters trust with people. #womeninmedicine
Amy Oxentenko MD @AmyOxentenkoMD
@womeninmedchat @InduPartha A1. Because of this, I tend to think of any ways to do things more efficiently, such as filling any downtime at work, making meetings more efficient, and deciding which ones really need my presence. Men can be very talented at this, so not unique to women. #WomenInMedicine
Indu Partha, MD FACP @InduPartha
@G2Disrupt @womeninmedchat I would have to agree. Though it maybe is cause for extra disappointment when this “assumption” doesn’t come to fruition. #WomenInMedicine
Vanessa Archila @VArchila3
RT @ACKoongMDPhD: #radonc salaries for women in US public academic institutions are lower than for men. In 2018, @MDAndersonNews salaries for #radonc are gender equal. #WomenInMedicine #womeninscience @ASTRO_org @ARRO_org @ppisters @WTereffeMD @IBCradiation https://t.co/fo9i96P2kY
Briana Christophers, PhD @BriChristophers
@womeninmedchat A1 pt 2. Also I find myself to be much more organized than many of my (particularly male/men) colleagues - not in a ‘braggy’ way, I guess I am more intentional with trying to make projects worth people’s time and effort esp to hit the ground running efficiently #WomenInMedicine
Valerie A. Fitzhugh, MD @DrFNA
@marishaburden @womeninmedchat @InduPartha I am certain that saying yes has lead to some great things, but my plate is full all the time! I guess I would get bored if it wasn’t #WomenInMedicine
Dr. Carri Glide-Hurst @CGlideHurst
@womeninmedchat @InduPartha A1: I celebrate our team successes, mentor the best way I know how, and I champion for them any chance I can, putting them up for opportunities internally/nationally. I am acutely aware of #womeninstem challenges and do my best to support up & coming women. #womeninmedicine
Shreya P. Trivedi MD, MHPE @ShreyaTrivediMD
@carriedbernard @womeninmedchat @InduPartha I sometimes find being so open about my worries can be a double edged sword and gets interpreted as stressed but for me, its way of being proactive to offset future challenges #WomeninMedicine
Dara Kass, MD @darakass
RT @DanaImMD: Cant’t wait to reflect, learn, and empower one another! #FIX18 #WomenInMedicine
Dink Jardine, MD, FACS @dinkjardine
RT @KrisEmilyMD: Also “I have a colleague who I can recommend.” Support and uplift others. #sheforshe #WomenInMedicine
Agnieszka Solberg MD @AgnesSolberg
A1 #womeninmedicine. I think I am very passionate about what I do. I love my job and I’m not afraid to show it! I excite easily and make learning fun! I love having fun at work :) So I love teaching and leading with the same flair. One of my fiends called it “agnes flair.”
Valerie A. Fitzhugh, MD @DrFNA
@InduPartha @womeninmedchat But also awesome. I would not change it! #WomenInMedicine
Ann Mc @AnnMcMD
RT @womeninmedchat: Welcome to #WomenInMedicine chat! We'll get started in 5-10mins w/ Q1, in the meantime please introduce yourself & make sure to use #womeninmedicine for every tweet for tonight's open chat with me, @petradMD. https://t.co/eVy6NrvVfb
Jennifer Yui, MD MS @JenniferYuiMD
@DrFNA @womeninmedchat @InduPartha Last week, in a meeting with someone senior to me, she suggested a project, and I said "That sounds like a great project, and I'd be happy to be involved, but don't have the bandwidth to lead this." It was scary but felt great, and she was super supportive! #WomenInMedicine
Jennifer Caputo-Seidler, MD @jennifermcaputo
@emily_fri @womeninmedchat @InduPartha I’m not a mom, but I can say I’ve never seen more efficient colleagues than moms who are breastfeeding and pumping at work #WomenInMedicine
Nonie S. Arora, MD MBA @nonie_arora
@PoojaLakshmin @womeninmedchat @InduPartha .MS4 Student here! I appreciate most when my attendings show me how they think. For a lot of medicine, there is no one right answer, and I like hearing how others navigate the ambiguity. Context matters! #WomeninMedicine
Agnieszka Solberg MD @AgnesSolberg
@JenniferYuiMD @womeninmedchat @InduPartha @RadiologyChicks This is particularly important when it comes to family leave policies. Just bc it sucked for us, doesn’t mean it should be that bad for the next generation. #womeninmedicine @RadiologyChicks
Dr. Jennifer Chen, MD FAAP 林 明 堯 @DrJenChen4kids
@womeninmedchat @InduPartha Q1: I definitely I take on a “big sister” role to many trainees, though to be fair, some residents did the same for me when I was a student regardless of their gender. Women in general have to tread the line between seeming confident vs arrogant more carefully #WomenInMedicine
Jennifer Caputo-Seidler, MD @jennifermcaputo
@JenniferYuiMD @AgnesSolberg @womeninmedchat @InduPartha @RadiologyChicks I’m glad we’re moving away from that malignant culture and to one of mentorship and encouragement #womeninmedicine
Jennifer Yui, MD MS @JenniferYuiMD
@KariSampsel @womeninmedchat @InduPartha This sense of humility is so wonderful to see in leaders, and makes it feel easier to aspire to be a leader as well, knowing that no one has all the answers! #WomenInMedicine
Amy Oxentenko MD @AmyOxentenkoMD
@womeninmedchat @InduPartha A1. When working with trainees in clinic, I always try to ask about their personal lives, such as their kids, hobbies, recent travel. Not sure if that is the nurturing part of being a woman, but they are someone’s kid, so I want them to feel special! #WomenInMedicine
Ann Mc @AnnMcMD
@petradMD #Womeninmedicine . Hello from Minnesota
Valerie A. Fitzhugh, MD @DrFNA
@JenniferYuiMD @womeninmedchat @InduPartha Congratulations! I hope it works out for you! #WomenInMedicine
#WomenInMedicine Chat @womeninmedchat
Now its time for Q2: How do the benefits and challenges of being a woman in medicine influence your interpersonal interactions outside of the workplace? From @AMedTypePerson #WomeninMedicine https://t.co/zwIV5emL2U
Abby Spencer, MD, MS, FACP @abbyWUim
@womeninmedchat @InduPartha A1 #WomenInMedicine. Leadership style is very team oriented— believe in mentoring, coaching, and sponsoring my team to help be their best and have the most confidence. Also believe that girls just want to have fun! Working together should be fun, enjoyable, motivating, &inspiring
Nonie S. Arora, MD MBA @nonie_arora
@AmyOxentenkoMD @womeninmedchat @InduPartha That's awesome! Would love any tips you think are generalizable from your experience. #womeninmedicine
Jennifer Yui, MD MS @JenniferYuiMD
@CGlideHurst @womeninmedchat @InduPartha The attitude of team successes being your personal successes as well really bolsters every member of the team! #WomenInMedicine
Agnieszka Solberg MD @AgnesSolberg
@AmyOxentenkoMD @womeninmedchat @InduPartha Agreed. I had one kid in IM residency and one in DR residency. Did DR in 3 years, had a baby, and passed the board exam ;) #winning #womeninmedicine Had supportive PD @TTUHSCEP.
Valerie A. Fitzhugh, MD @DrFNA
@InduPartha @womeninmedchat One of my colleagues said to me, “I don’t know how you hold it all together.” My response? “With paper clips and chewing gum of course!” #WomenInMedicine
Amy Oxentenko MD @AmyOxentenkoMD
@KariSampsel @womeninmedchat @InduPartha That probably helps to destigmatize medical errors and other such things with your disclosures. They probably appreciate that significantly. #WomenInMedicine
Emily Fridenmaker @emily_fri
RT @AmyGDalaMD:
Shreya P. Trivedi MD, MHPE @ShreyaTrivediMD
@womeninmedchat @AMedTypePerson A2. the challenge of as a #WomeninMedicine is that my family/friends often dont understand the #sacrifices this field takes. Explaining myself of why I have to work twice as a hard to in hopes of getting the same #protected time or a seat at the table as my male colleagues
Bonnie Callahan @bcallahan430
@womeninmedchat @AMedTypePerson I think it makes me confident in other areas of life. #WomenInMedicine

Kari Sampsel @KariSampsel
@womeninmedchat @AMedTypePerson A2: It is really handy for parenting young children as negotiations can be very similar 🙄. Also - I have felt what it is like to be not valued the same - so I know how to ask for what I want! #womeninmedicine
Sonya Tang Girdwood 鄧 智佳, MD, PhD @STangGirdwood
@womeninmedchat @InduPartha A1: The #1 driver of the difference in my leadership style and that of my male colleagues is that I am a “feeler” rather than “thinker” according to Meyers-Briggs. So the leadership style difference also exists between myself and female thinker colleagues. #womeninmedicine
Dr. Susan Love @DrSusanLove
RT @AmyOxentenkoMD: @womeninmedchat @petradMD Hi all! Amy Oxentenko here. I have missed you all the last 3 weeks, but have been knee-deep in nearly 2500+ ERAS applications, 3 work trips, and both Homecoming and Conformation for my son. Calgon! GI doc and IM program director at Mayo Clinic. #WomenInMedicine
Valerie A. Fitzhugh, MD @DrFNA
@womeninmedchat @AMedTypePerson A2: it all keeps me organized. I’ve learned in my training and beyond to make time for the things that matter most to be. That applies inside and outside the hospital/medical school! #WomenInMedicine
Shreya P. Trivedi MD, MHPE @ShreyaTrivediMD
@womeninmedchat @AMedTypePerson A2. So my interpersonal interactions the past few months have been explaining to many of friends & family why I am getting an #MHPE but they are still confused why I need to get more degrees to build #value & credibility for myself #WomeninMedicine
Erika Hamilton, MD @ErikaHamilton9
@womeninmedchat @AMedTypePerson A2: Challenges: we live in the south so it still surprises me how few women work/stereotypes around that..eg. can never attend preschool Mom meet ups (they are at 10 am during the week). Benefits: I don’t sweat the small stuff. I believe in quality over quantity. #WomenInMedicine
olgatheotter @OlgatheOtter
@womeninmedchat @AMedTypePerson A2: So much to say. I find difficulty interacting with other women who are not in medicine. Being a mom with kids in school is not easy-I'm not available to be room mom, to do class trips. Nobody gets what we are juggling #womeninmedicine
Jennifer Caputo-Seidler, MD @jennifermcaputo
@rheum_cat @womeninmedchat @InduPartha It’s a lose-lose situation, either you’re not assertive enough in your presentation style or you’re not warm and likable enough #WomeninMedicine
Sonya Tang Girdwood 鄧 智佳, MD, PhD @STangGirdwood
@womeninmedchat @InduPartha I think I just am more aware of the style difference among my male colleagues because I’m less comfortable showing emotion in front of them #WomenInMedicine
Erika Hamilton, MD @ErikaHamilton9
@womeninmedchat @InduPartha #WomeninMedicine
Pooja Lakshmin MD @PoojaLakshmin
@womeninmedchat @AMedTypePerson A2 it’s a blessing and a curse. At times I feel confident and assertive because of my role as a #WomenInMedicine At others times it’s a burden and I want to be completely anonymous.
Amy Oxentenko MD @AmyOxentenkoMD
@womeninmedchat @InduPartha I think as women, we are often more likely to say yes to everything early on given we are so afraid the opportunities are going to stop or we will offend if we say no. But you need to look out for yourself and realize that you cannot do it all. #WomenInMedicine
Valerie A. Fitzhugh, MD @DrFNA
@InduPartha @marishaburden @womeninmedchat While I don’t honk we as women are inherently helpful in many cases, we must keep our own well being in mind! #WomenInMedicine
Sonya Tang Girdwood 鄧 智佳, MD, PhD @STangGirdwood
@womeninmedchat @petradMD Hi everyone. I’m a Hospital Medicine Fellow at Cincinnati! #WomenInMedicine
Bonnie Callahan @bcallahan430
@womeninmedchat @AMedTypePerson I should qualify that confidence comment. I feel like if I got through med school, then residency (with heart failure), I have got this. I have four kids and work full time in primary care medicine and it has given me confidence I can go whatever I need to. #WomenInMedicine
Dr. Elisa Choi, MD, FACP, FIDSA (She/Her) @DrElisaChoi

Ilana Krumm @IlanaKrumm

@TerryAdirimMD @womeninmedchat @WhiteCoatDiary Although I will say that I really enjoyed this book when I first read it. It has some amazing quotes that I think so perfectly describe our journey. Plus, reading how she dealt with lice on a work trip made her seem so human and could relate!!!! #WomenInMedicine

@womeninmedchat @WhiteCoatDiary A4 #WomenInMedicine My favorite leadership books are: anything by @BreneBrown especially braving wilderness & gift of imperfection. Also 7 habits, good to great, drive, switch, crucial conversations, what got u here won’t get u there, negotiate like life depends on it, lean in

@womeninmedchat @MrsDrMonty A3. Pressure to appear likable that competes with the pressure to resolve the conflict. Delicate balance to confront issues without being seen as "bossy" or "demanding." Especially heightened as a student when you lack status in the hierarchy. #MS4 #WomeninMedicine

@womeninmedchat @MrsDrMonty Q3: I was more direct/opinionated growing up (first child syndrome haha) but have learned to listen first, process that input, then speak, as much as possible. I’ve seen men do that well too, but let’s just say #mansplaining is aptly named 🙃 #WomenInMedicine

RT @AmyOxentenkoMD: @empathsupreme @womeninmedchat @MrsDrMonty I think we can learn so much from our male counterparts, just like they are learning things from us. Let’s learn from the talents we each tend to have, and adapt ones that we need to work on if they are not intuitive yet effective. #WomenInMedicine
Diana Cejas, MD, MPH @DianaCejasMD
@womeninmedchat @WhiteCoatDiary For us introverts, I'd recommend Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking by Susan Cain. It really helps you recognize and learn to tap into your own (quiet) strength & leadership #WomenInMedicine
Pooja Lakshmin MD @PoojaLakshmin
RT @JenniferYuiMD: @TerryAdirimMD @womeninmedchat @WhiteCoatDiary Yes! "Lean In" is the equivalent of saying "Doctors shouldn't make mistakes" when doing a Root Cause Analysis, instead of focusing on systems issues! And I have been reading a lot of HBR too! #WomenInMedicine
Agnieszka Solberg MD @AgnesSolberg
@TerryAdirimMD @womeninmedchat @WhiteCoatDiary I liked it. It gave 👩 ideas on how to sit at the table in a man’s world... to me this is the first step on changing the culture. Cultural change takes longer... have to take 1st steps to get more 👩 in leadership. Issue is multi-faceted - book addresses 1 facet. #womeninmedicine
